Bachelorette party on St Simons Island

A magical weekend celebrating my precious daughter-in-law to be. St. Simons Island is absolutely beautiful and our home away from home was spectacular!

My beautiful daughter-in-law.

Our home for the next four days.

Our first day was spent leisurely relaxing between the pool or the beach!

Friday night we had dinner out at a local favorite, The Rooftop and it was delicious!

Our second day was spent touring the island. With low tide, we were actually able to walk along the ocean to downtown.

Our mode of transportation was a delightful “trolley car”.

St Simons Island, one of the famed Golden Isles, was aptly called “San Simone” by 16th century Spanish explorers. Now the word “wonderful” is simply used by those who frequent its shores.

The island is abundant in historical sites. Our first stop was St Simons Lighthouse, which is the oldest brick structure in the area and still maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard. It was originally constructed in 1807 and destroyed by Confederate forces in 1862. The 104 foot lighthouse was reconstructed on the same site in 1872.

Next we traveled to Fort Frederica. Established in 1736 by James Ogelthorpe to protect the southern boundary of his new colony of Georgia. The site includes a fortress which helped protect against Spanish invaders from Florida in 1742.

Christ Church congregation origins date back to 1776. The first church structure being built in 1820 but was partially destroyed by Union troops. In 1884 the present church was built by Anson Phelps Dodge Jr in memory of his wife.

Anne Page King planted the magnificent “Avenue of Oaks”. Once upon a time, St Simons Island was home to a thriving lumber industry whose timbers were used in 1794 to build the U.S.S. Constitution and in 1874 the Brooklyn Bridge.

On Hamilton Plantation are the two remaining tabby slave cabins. They were constructed of tabby, a mixture similar to concrete of lime, sand, water and oyster shells. The cabins were divided down the middle by a fire place or a rope, so two families could live in them.

We had a perfectly lovely time and totally enjoyed each others company!

Watching dolphins, relaxing and of course a few shenanigans added to the a wonderful weekend celebration.

We can’t wait to see each other again for the wedding!
