Christmas in Door County

As a birthday present to my husband, we returned to Door County the first weekend in December for a Winter Wine Tour and Carriage Ride.

Door County is full of many things to delight all your senses with one of my favorite being its history.

Our driver took us down a path following the bayside which intersetingly had a stone wall along most of it. He proceeded to tell us that during World War II, between 1945 and 1946 many German prisoners of war were employed in Door County.

Lack of labor during the war meant these POWS were very important in assisting the cherry orchard owners. When harvesting was finished, they also helped to build this wall.

Their building supplies were readily available by simply walking across the street to collect the limestone rocks.

Our next stop was an old English Inn for a delicious fireside lunch.

We returned to our favorite bed and breakfast for the evening. After getting settled, we strolled the streets of Ephraim enjoying their Christmas festivities.

As this was a short trip, we headed home the next day. No trip to Door County would be complete without stopping at a lighthouse. There are actually eleven working lighthouses in Door County and The Sturgeon Bay Pierhead is my favorite so far. It is so pretty!
